Established in 1964, Madhabdev College initially offered Arts and Science streams up to the degree level, along with Higher Secondary courses. Nine years after the establishment of the College, the Department of Philosophy was founded in 1975. The Late Illa Sarmah served as the founder Professor and Head of the Department, laying a strong academic foundation for philosophical studies.
In 2019, Madhabdev College was upgraded to Madhabdev University. In keeping with the expansion of academic and research activities, the Department of Philosophy introduced Postgraduate (PG) and PhD programes in 2023.
At present, the Department has six (6) research scholars, In the academic year 2024–2025, a total of 237 students is enrolled in the core subject at both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) levels. The Department is supported by four permanent faculty and two guest faculty members who are actively engaged in teaching, research, and academic extension activities.
The Department places special emphasis on developing a sound understanding of values, morality, and environmental ethics, along with advanced philosophical knowledge, through a well-structured curriculum designed by the Board of Studies of the Departments. The major areas of academic engagement include Logic, Religion, Applied Ethics, Environmental Ethics, and allied disciplines. The Department actively promotes a research-oriented culture, and so far, four UGC, ICSSR and ICPR-funded research projects, seminars have been successfully completed by its faculty members.
The Department offers both core with 70 intake capacity and minor with 70 intake capacity courses at the undergraduate and Core with 40 intake capacity and GE and AEC with 40 intact capacities at the postgraduate levels. Alumni of the Department have secured placements in schools, colleges, and various other organizations across different parts of the state.
The Departmental Library, “Illa Sarmah Grantha Bhandar,” was established in the year 2000. The Department has its own library with a good collection of books for students. Most of the books have been donated by faculty members, while a significant contribution was also made by Late Siva Sarmah, retired Principal and husband of Late Illa Sarmah. To nurture creativity and academic expression among students, the Department periodically publishes its wall magazine “Chayanika” and its annual magazine “Jñānam.” In addition, the Department regularly organizes study tours and celebrates Teachers’ Day, World Philosophy Day with great enthusiasm.
The Department regularly organizes lectures, seminars, and group discussions. It also observes Teachers’ Day on the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on 5th September. In addition, World Philosophy Day is celebrated every year by inviting eminent resource persons.
